How to get a car accident report in North Carolina

North Carolina provides crash reports statewide through myNCDMV Crash Report Portal (Request a Crash Report) — including crashes handled by local police and county sheriffs.

Step by step

  1. Collect your crash details. Have the date of the crash, the county/city where it happened, the last name of a driver involved, and — if you have it — the DMV-349 crash report (case) number. NC crash reports are usually available online a few business days after the investigating officer files them.
  2. Open the myNCDMV crash report service. Go to the official NC DMV portal at payments.ncdot.gov and choose "Request a Crash Report" (direct link https://payments.ncdot.gov/service/crash-report). It redirects to the myNCDMV / PayIt sign-in.
  3. Sign in and search for the crash. Create or log in to a free myNCDMV (PayIt) account, then search by involved party's last name + crash date + county, or by the DMV-349 report number, to locate the record.
  4. Pay $6.50 and download the report. Pay the statutory $6.50 fee (N.C.G.S. § 20-42(b)) by card and download/receive the certified DMV-349 crash report.
  5. If it isn't online, request from NC DMV directly. Reports not yet posted (or older records) can be requested by mail or in person from the NC DMV Traffic Records / crash report unit in Raleigh, or from the investigating agency; the $6.50 fee still applies.

State police / highway patrol crashes

NC State Highway Patrol (SHP) crashes are documented on the DMV-349 and submitted to NC DMV like every other agency's — there is no separate Highway Patrol crash-report portal. Obtain an SHP-investigated report the same way: online through myNCDMV (payments.ncdot.gov/service/crash-report) for $6.50, or by mail/in person from the NC DMV crash report (Traffic Records) unit in Raleigh if it isn't yet available online.

Crashes handled by local police or sheriffs

North Carolina is a centralized state: every law-enforcement agency — NC State Highway Patrol, city police departments, and county sheriffs — investigates crashes on the same statewide DMV-349 form and submits it to the NC DMV Traffic Records unit, the central repository. So for a crash handled by a LOCAL city PD or county sheriff, the person uses the SAME myNCDMV portal (payments.ncdot.gov/service/crash-report), $6.50, no need to contact the local agency. A few large municipal departments (e.g., Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD, Raleigh PD) also sell copies directly and some NC municipal reports appear in third-party services (LexisNexis BuyCrash / Carfax crashdocs), but the state DMV portal is the universal path that covers all agencies.

After you get the report

Use the DMV-349 for your insurance claim — adjusters typically need the crash report (case) number, the investigating officer/agency, and the other party's insurance and vehicle info, all of which are on it. Review it for errors (misspelled names, wrong plate or insurance, incorrect crash diagram, or wrong contributing-factor/fault coding); if something is wrong, contact the investigating officer/agency to file a correction or supplemental report, since insurers and any injury claim rely on this record.
