Step by step

  1. Identify the investigating agency. Determine who worked the crash: the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) handles interstates and state/US highways; a city police department or county sheriff handles most local streets and county roads. You'll need to pick that agency in the portal.
  2. Open the DPS crash report portal and accept the eligibility disclaimer. Go to https://www.ms.gov/dps/crash_reports and accept the disclaimer certifying you are one of the 5 authorized requesters under Miss. Code Ann. § 63-3-417 (involved party, estate rep, next of kin, legal representative, or insurer). The general public cannot obtain the report.
  3. Select the agency and search for the report. Choose the investigating agency from the dropdown (MHP or a participating local PD/sheriff), then search by the last name of a person involved plus the incident date, or by the state/local case number, or by the VIN/license plate of a vehicle involved.
  4. Pay the fee and download immediately. Pay the agency's fee ($20.00 standard for an MHP report; varies by local agency, plus a handling fee). The report is emailed and available for only 24 hours, so download and save your copy right away.
  5. If the agency isn't in the portal, go direct. If the local police department or sheriff that worked your crash is not in the portal's agency list, contact that agency's records division directly, or get an MHP report in person at any Highway Patrol district station for $15.00.

State police / highway patrol crashes

Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP, agency code 90) reports: buy online at https://www.ms.gov/dps/crash_reports (select 'MHP' as the agency; $20.00 standard / $49.95 high-resolution), or in person at any MHP district Highway Patrol station for $15.00. Search by last name + incident date, case number, or VIN/plate. MHP reports are administered by the DPS Driver Service Bureau (P.O. Box 1459, Canton, MS 39046; 601-487-7028). You must be one of the § 63-3-417 authorized requesters.

Crashes handled by local police or sheriffs

Mississippi routes local crashes primarily through the SAME statewide ms.gov portal, not through LexisNexis BuyCrash or Carfax crashdocs. The portal's Agency dropdown includes ~57 participating local agencies alongside MHP — e.g., Jackson, Gulfport, Southaven, Horn Lake, Olive Branch, Tupelo, Meridian, Laurel, Oxford, Starkville, Ridgeland, Madison, Pearl, Brandon, Clinton, Greenville, and Pascagoula police departments; DeSoto, Tate, Tishomingo, Greene, Itawamba, and Jefferson Davis county sheriff offices; plus university/Capitol police. If your agency is listed, order there ($20 standard is typical; fees vary $5-$35). If the city PD or sheriff that worked your crash is NOT in the list, request the report directly from that agency's records division (in person, by mail, or via that agency's own portal) — coverage is broad but not universal.

Use the crash report to file your insurance claim — it carries the crash date/location, the involved parties and vehicles, insurance information, and the officer's narrative and diagram. Read it carefully for errors (misspelled names, wrong plate/VIN, incorrect insurance carrier, or an inaccurate fault/contributing-factor coding) and ask the investigating agency to correct any mistakes, since insurers and any later claim rely on it. Because the online copy is only available for 24 hours after purchase, download and save it (and a backup) immediately.
