How to get a car accident report in Kentucky

Kentucky provides crash reports statewide through LexisNexis BuyCrash (Kentucky) — including crashes handled by local police and county sheriffs.

Step by step

  1. Confirm you're an eligible party. Kentucky crash reports are confidential under KRS 189.635. Only involved drivers/owners, a minor's parent/guardian, the parties' insurer, or the parties' attorney (or a litigant who files a stamped court complaint) may obtain one. Have your relationship to the crash ready.
  2. Gather your report details. You'll need the crash/report date, the last name of a driver or owner, and at least one identifier: the report/case number, the investigating officer's badge number, or a driver's license number. The investigating officer usually hands out a card with the report number at the scene.
  3. Search on BuyCrash. Go to buycrash.lexisnexisrisk.com (the old buycrash.com redirects there), choose State = Kentucky, then pick the investigating agency/jurisdiction (KSP post, city police, or county sheriff), and enter your search fields.
  4. Pay and download. Pay the $10 fee by credit card (Visa/MasterCard/Discover/Amex) or PayPal. The PDF of the Kentucky Uniform Police Traffic Collision Report downloads immediately and is also emailed to you.
  5. Or request from the agency directly. If you prefer not to use BuyCrash (or the report isn't posted yet), request it from the investigating agency's records unit -- the KSP post that worked the crash for state-police crashes, or the local city PD / county sheriff. Many accept a mailed request with a $5 check payable to the Kentucky Treasurer plus a self-addressed stamped envelope; reports are typically available ~5 days after filing.

State police / highway patrol crashes

Kentucky State Police (KSP)-investigated crashes: order online via LexisNexis BuyCrash (buycrash.lexisnexisrisk.com), select Kentucky then the KSP post, pay $10 -- OR request from the KSP post/barracks that worked the crash. By mail, write to the KSP post with the crash date, location, and officer name, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and a $5 check/money order payable to the Kentucky Treasurer; in person some posts provide a copy at the post. Not-yet-posted or specialized requests go to the KSP Official Custodian of Records via an Open Records Request (interested party) -- kentuckystatepolice.ky.gov/open-records-requests. IMPORTANT: the separate KSP 'Civilian Traffic Collision Report' portal at kspportal.ky.gov/CivilianCollisionReporting is NOT for officer reports -- it's a self-service repository where citizens FILE their own report for minor crashes police did not respond to.

Crashes handled by local police or sheriffs

Crashes worked by Kentucky local agencies (city police, county sheriff) are served through the SAME BuyCrash portal -- most Kentucky local agencies upload their reports there (e.g., Lexington Police, Lakeside Park/Crestview Hills PD). The requester selects Kentucky, then the local agency as the jurisdiction, and pays $10. Some larger agencies also offer direct records service: Lexington Police, for example, sells reports via BuyCrash/in-person for $10 or by mail for $5; Louisville Metro (LMPD) is obtained through the city's police records process. If an agency isn't listed on BuyCrash, request the report directly from that agency's records unit. Because the reports are confidential (KRS 189.635), every route still limits release to involved parties, insurers, and attorneys.

After you get the report

Use the report to open or support your insurance claim (give the insurer the report/case number so they can pull it as an authorized designee). Read it carefully and check for errors -- names, driver's-license and plate numbers, insurance info, crash date/location, the diagram, and the contributing-factor/citation codes -- since insurers and attorneys rely on it. If something is wrong, contact the investigating agency (KSP post or local records unit) to request a correction or a supplemental report; do not alter the PDF yourself.
