How to get a car accident report in Idaho

Idaho provides crash reports statewide through ITD Crash Reports (via Idaho.gov) — including crashes handled by local police and county sheriffs.

Step by step

  1. Go to the ITD Crash Reports portal. Open apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/HWY_CrashReports (the state's single statewide crash-report portal, purchased through Idaho.gov). Note that a new report takes a few weeks to appear online, and longer depending on the reporting agency.
  2. Search for your crash. Enter at least one search parameter: your first/last name, the city and/or county of the crash, the last 4 digits of your driver's license, the law enforcement Case ID, or a crash date range (From/To). All fields are optional but at least one must be filled.
  3. Select your report. Locate your crash in the results list and select the correct record. Confirm the date, location, and parties match your incident before purchasing.
  4. Pay through Idaho.gov. Pay $7.00 per report plus the Idaho.gov transaction fee (about $9.00 total at checkout) by credit/debit card. Collision records are public information under Idaho Code § 49-202.
  5. Download the PDF. Download the PDF crash report. It remains available to download for up to 24 hours after purchase, so save a copy immediately.

State police / highway patrol crashes

Idaho State Police (ISP) crash reports are submitted to ITD like every other agency, so ISP-investigated crashes can be purchased through the same statewide ITD Crash Reports portal (apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/HWY_CrashReports). Alternatively, request directly from ISP through its public-records portal at idahostatepolice.justfoia.com/publicportal, or by phone/in person at the appropriate district office (Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, Meridian, Jerome, Pocatello, Idaho Falls), or by mail to Idaho State Police, 700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian, ID 83642 (provide the crash date, location, and case number).

Crashes handled by local police or sheriffs

Idaho is a Bucket A state: one statewide portal serves everyone. Crashes handled by local city police departments and county sheriffs are entered on the standard state crash form and transmitted electronically to the Idaho Transportation Department (Idaho Code § 49-1307), then reviewed by an ITD crash analyst and posted to the same ITD Crash Reports portal at apps.itd.idaho.gov/apps/HWY_CrashReports (via Idaho.gov). You do NOT go agency-by-agency and there is no LexisNexis BuyCrash / Carfax crashdocs step for the statewide path. If a report has not yet appeared online (can take a few weeks, longer for some agencies), you can request it directly from the responding agency's records unit in the interim.

After you get the report

Give the crash report (and its case number) to your insurance adjuster to open or support your claim — it documents date, location, parties, vehicles, and the officer's narrative and any citation/fault indication. Review it carefully for errors in names, vehicle/driver info, date, location, the diagram, and the narrative; an ITD crash analyst reviews reports for accuracy but mistakes still occur. To fix an error, contact the law enforcement agency that wrote the report to request a correction or supplemental report.
